The second Virtual Boy repair on the channel but this time with a clever repair/mod kit designed specifically for the biggest issue afflicting faulty Virtual Boys: the Virtual Ribbon has arrived.
Well, it arrived some time ago apparently and I've just been living under a rock, but the newest and latest version is here and I put my skills to the test installing it. The creator has also recently released a noob-friendly install aid called the EZ Mount to simplify the repair, and we love the sound of that!
I went on a bit of a shopping spree for this restoration, and pretty much bought all the missing accessories I needed to dress this Virtual Boy up, and a handsome boy it turned out to be indeed. Hope you enjoy the restoration.
🤟🏻 Big thank you to @fenriswolfretro6729 for sending this broken Virtual Boy my way.

I guess I'm glad I never got rid of mine :D It has the CD drive and both are complete with their original boxes and accessories. I never kept track of their values as retro systems (same for my Saturn and Colecovision). The one time I thought something had failed was when CD's started scraping in the drive. I found out that it was just the drive unit had become dislodged from its friction fit mounts on the motherboard. A little jiggle and all was well. A modest collection of cartridges (25 plus the memory cart) and seven CD titles (Baldies, Battlemorph, BrainDead 13 and Highlander, plus the pack-ins that came with the CD unit) round out that corner of my collection.

To remove scratches the surrounding paintwork is removed and therefore thinning the paint so that next time it's scratched it could go through. It would make more sense to fill in the scratch with lacquer and polish until the excess is removed

Scratch doctor did a heck of a job, and Meguiar's compound didn't do too bad either. Out of those two, I'd go with whatever's cheapest and has the least dodgy chemicals in. The orange polishing compound sucks giant arse crack, just makes the plastic look foggy. If all you want to do is make plastic look foggy, just give it a rub over with some grey scotch pad... Good test fella.

Great video of the Mod. I did this mod on my Sega Master System 2 as well. Unlike the one you got that has a Sony CXA1145P encoder with the Alex Kidd in Mracle World Built-In.. Mine is a Fujitsu MB3514 Encoder with the Sonic 1 Built-In. The one I opted in for was Console Unleashed's no-wire QSB board option so I didn't have to wire each video signal line. The RGB Video on it is phenomenal. Good work on this mate.

I would HIGHLY recommend getting a soldering hot air station with a forced air pump inside, The difference is the air is generated inside the station, and then forced out with a pump, vs forced out of the handle with pretty much a fan. making this upgrade will change your repairs and your confidence working with all board SMD repairs.
